Candis Cayne

Candis Cayne is the first transgender actor to play a recurring transgender character on prime time television. Nunn on the run talked to the sweet diva herself.

Jerry Nunn: Hey there. So you’ve got a new guest spot coming up on Drop Dead Diva.

Candis Cayne: Yes! I’m super excited about that.  They asked me to do a part on the show, and of course, I was like, yay! So the creators and I went to dinner, and they talked about this character they wanted to do, and it’s a law show when it comes down to it.  They wanted to kind of discuss the idea of me playing a transgendered character who was married to a woman, and then went through the transition, and so it ended up that the two women were married. And so where’s the legal ramification in that and how is that going to work out? Her wife dies and now my character has the house and the assets, and her parents want to take it all away from me, because they say we weren’t legally married. And so it kind of explores that law. It was a really good experience.  And Lifetime was so happy with it, they’re going to air it at OutFest next year, and we’re going to do a panel afterwards with Cybil Shepard, because she was on that episode too.

JN: Well that sounds awesome, congratulations. That episode sounds like it will be important to a lot of people.

Margaret Cho

Margaret Cho is always on the go. This summer is no different for her. Her fifth stand-up concert, “Beautiful,” premiered recently on Showtime and her role as Teri Jane on Drop Dead Diva is on its second season. Having met Margaret during Windy City Media Group’s meet-and-greet at Sidetrack years ago, it was great to see that she hasn’t changed from being the same sweet and genuinely funny person.

Jerry Nunn: Hello Margaret, it’s me—Jerry. I just saw your new show, Drop Dead Diva. It’s very cute has a great deal to say about how people judge people on looks. Did that attract you to the project?

Margaret Cho: Yes, I really loved the script. It’s a great concept and there is so much about it that I really relate to. Body image is something that I have talked about in my work for years. The story is about women and how we value our looks in this country and society. It’s not just about women but could apply to everyone. It’s close to my heart.

JN: How do you like working with [ co-star ] Brooke Elliott?

MC: I love her. She’s great. She’s an amazing actress. I think the reason the show works so well is because she makes this fantastic situation very believable. She’s an extraordinary artist and I am very excited to be working with her.

JN: What do you like about acting on a television show as opposed to traveling around performing stand up?
